Clubhouse and Amenities – Rating 8.84

Located in Michigan’s upper peninsula the clubhouse for Sweetgrass Golf Club is part of the hotel complex with many guest rooms, an indoor pool, a variety of accommodations for stay and play golf packages and one of the best golf clubs in the UP. The clubhouse is just a short walk from parking. The bag drop, and service all rate top marks. There is a large practice green and practice facility available. Cart paths, amenities, food selection, drinks and bar, equipment and apparel selections are all above average and around average pricing. There is a yardage book available.

Large and level tee blocks start you off the front 9 on this shorter par 4. The fairway is rolling in some areas and flat in others with long rough. There are real sand bunkers and a maintained fringe. The green is quite large and receptive. It putts at a medium speed.

Medium sized, level tees allow you to tee off into the flat fairway with a water hazard off the front of the tee left. Hole runs left so you can try to cut off as much as you can over the left hazard. The rough is long and the bunkers are real sand. The maintained fringe hugs the green, which is medium in size and fast in speed. The surface is hard to hold and rolling.

The final par 3 is challenging and beautiful. Tee off from large, level tees and carry to the green over a water hazard that fronts the green and guards the left side. No bunkers to contend with and the fringe is maintained. This hard, rolling green is quite fast and medium in size. We consider this to be their signature hole.

SUMMARY:

Sweetgrass Golf Course is an upper peninsula course and a true destination course. The tees and fairways all get top marks and there is a consistency throughout the course in all aspects. It is a unique golf course provides a unique golf experience with wonderful strategic holes and many an elevation change. From the Black tees it plays 7,275 and like a lot of great courses has well-undulated greens and a lot of the long rough to avoid. With a more open layout which helps keep the game of golf moving and makes it a top of the list golf course for golfers of a lot of different levels. As one of the top golf courses is a significant amount of water and an island green. The maintenance crew does an exceptional job all around. Sweetgrass Golf Course is very active in the local community and with local charities and a wonderful organization. As an upper peninsula resort (with a new hotel tower) there are some greats golf deals to be had, plus the course rates well overall and we consider it a value play, especially at package rates.
