Pilgrim’s Run provides good and ample parking along with a bag drop. Service is very good throughout. Carts and cart paths are in wonderful shape. There is a large driving range with instruction area, as well as putting greens and chipping practice area. Clubhouse is excellent and amenities are decent. They have an average selection of equipment along with a large variety of apparel with average pricing on both. Additionally, food and drink selection and pricing are average. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, even sharing a story about the course name being based on the book Pilgrim’s Progress.

Hole 1 – Par 5 – Rating 9.14

Easing you into the round is Hole 1, named Pleasant Arbor, a par 5 with a very level and large set of tee boxes. Hole 1 has a beautiful rolling fairway with medium length, dense rough. Bunkers are real sand. Fringe is very well maintained. The large green is very receptive and runs at a fast speed.

Hole 2, Difficulty: Beginning on a medium sized, level tee block, the drive is uphill into a rolling fairway is framed by medium length rough. The hole is a slight dogleg left. A small pond left of the green calls for accuracy on approach. Bunkers are real sand and fringe is well maintained. the large green is receptive and runs a fast speed. Subtle breaks were noted.

Hole 3, Slough of Despond: A pond is alongside the medium size, level tee blocks, leading to a nice rolling fairway with dense, medium length rough. Bunkers are real sand and maintained. Fringe is well-trimmed. The large green running at fast speed is very receptive. Water is only a hazard off the tee.

Hole 4, Deception: This short par 3 starts with large, elevated and level tee blocks, is straight away and plays slightly downhill. Real sand bunkers frame a smaller fast speed green that is sloped back to front and can hold shots with how receptive it is. Fringe is well maintained and the rough is thick.

Hole 5, Sleepy Temptation: A level, medium size set of elevated tee blocks start this dogleg left. Following is a fairly flat fairway with thick, medium length rough and excellent real sand bunkers. Fringe is well maintained. Hole features an undulating medium sized, receptive green which is tiered and runs at fast speed.

Hole 6, Vainglory: A small and level elevated tee leads to a rolling fairway that runs downhill and back uphill on this double dogleg par 5. First, the fairway moves right then slightly back left before the green. Rough is medium length but dense. Real sand bunkers and a maintained fringe are followed by a medium sized green with a fast speed that is very receptive, rolling, tiered and sloped back to front.

The Bottomless Pit lives up to its name. Hole 7 is a long par 3 from multiple sets of tees that are elevated, level and large. Water is in play on the left side all the way. Water is well-maintained and bunkers are real sand. Green is large with well-maintained fringes, fast speed and a very receptive, rolling surface that slopes back to front.

Hole 8, Error Hill: Level, elevated and medium size tees point to a sharp dogleg left. On this hole, position is more important than distance. One encounters a rolling fairway that runs uphill, medium, dense rough, and real and bunkers. It all leads to a large, receptive and rolling, elevated green that is tiered and sloped back to front with a consistent fast speed.

Hole 9, House Beautiful: Nice medium size, level tee blocks start this shorter par 4 hole to finish the front. The clubhouse is in view as you navigate a flat fairway lined with medium, thick rough. Bunkers are real sand. Well maintained fringes encircle the medium size, receptive green with rolling surface and fast speed.

Hole 10, Wicket Gate: Elevated, large and level tee blocks take you out to start the back 9. Hole 10 is a slight dogleg right on this short par 4. Position is all. A rolling fairway with medium rough bordering and real sand bunkers are features of this hole. A large green with a well-maintained fringe awaits you which is very receptive, rolling and features a large ridge. The green putts at a medium speed.

Hole 11, Giant Despair: Level, medium size tee blocks start this 2nd longest hole on the course. Fairway takes you uphill and doglegs slightly right, with medium rough. Hole 13, Dark Valley: The longest hole on the course starts on level, elevated, medium size tee boxes and leads to a rolling fairway with a slight dogleg left. Medium length rough lines the fairway. Excellent real sand bunkering. Well-maintained fringe surrounds a large receptive, rolling green that is tiered and slopes back to front with a fast speed.

Level, medium size tee blocks begin this medium length par 4 that is aptly named “Straight Way”. A rolling fairway is bordered by medium, thick, rough. Real sand bunkers hug the green and the maintained fringes. This green is medium in size, with a fast putting, rolling and receptive surface that slopes back to front.

Hole 17, Narrow Way: Short narrow par 4 starts with level, medium size tee boxes and transitions to a rolling slightly uphill fairway with medium length, thick, rough. Real sand bunkers and maintained fringe guard the large green. The green is receptive, rolling and tiered, running at fast speed. Keep to the middle.

Hole 18, Entice: Standing on the level, medium size, elevated tee blocks this hole really tries to talk you into going for it, making that one spectacular shot. Don’t fall for it unless you are a long hitter. A beautiful downhill, uphill fairway doglegs right around a well-maintained pond. Pond is only a hazard if you get greedy. Safe play can give good birdie chances. Rough is dense and medium in length. Completes the course with real sand bunkers, maintained fringe and a large, receptive, rolling and fast speed green that slopes back to front.

SUMMARY:

Pilgrim’s Run Golf Club is one of the best courses in the greater Grand Rapids area and western Michigan. All aspects of this beautiful golf course score 8 or higher.  Designed by architect Mike Devries with bent grass fairways, pristine undulating bent grass greens and distinctive green complexes, Pilgrims Run is a challenge.
