Ironwood Links Golf Course Clubhouse

Clubhouse and Amenities – Rating 6.00

The clubhouse at Ironwood Links Golf Course is spacious, and a great place to kick back before or after a round in the Lansing area. The parking is adequate but there is no bag drop. Expect very limited equipment and apparel selections but decently priced. The food and drinks are a bit above average, especially on the food side, where they have an expanded menu including some dinners, and a wider range of salads and sandwiches. Carts are good but there is not much in the way of cart paths. Service was top notch. Amenities include putting green and driving range.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 1

Hole 1 – Par 4 – Rating 5.14

Red: 227 yds
White: 245 yds

Large, level tees begin your round on this executive style, short course. The fairway is flat and slightly downhill with medium length rough. Note the water hazard in not good shape left off the tee but not really in play. No bunkers are on this hole. A maintained fringe is around the small, slow putting green that is receptive.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 2

Hole 2 – Par 3 – Rating 4.40

Red: 57 yds

The tees are large, level and in need of some TLC. This short par 3 plays over a pond covered in algae. There are no bunkers so only the pond and medium length rough guard the green. The fringe is not maintained well. The green is medium in size and speed with a receptive and rolling surface.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 3

Hole 3 – Par 3 – Rating 5.20

Hole 4 – Par 4 – Rating 5.60

Red: 261 yds

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 6

Hole 6 – Par 4 – Rating 5.20

Red: 254 yds
White: 285 yds

The tees are level and large on hole 6. It comes as no surprise at this point that the par 4 is short, with a flat fairway and medium length rough. Again, there are no hazards. A maintained fringe surrounds this small, receptive, and medium speed green.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 7

Hole 7 – Par 4 – Rating 4.40

Red: 238 yds
White: 254 yds

Large and level tee blocks begin this short par 4. Medium length rough edges the flat fairway that runs slightly downhill. Golf with no hazards and note fringe unmaintained. The green is, however, different in that the surface is hard and it putts at a fast speed. Green is small in size and hard to hold.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 8

Hole 8 – Par 3 – Rating 4.40

Red: 89 yds
White: 112 yds

Large and level tees start you on this par 3. Tee off over a water hazard that is unkept but a hazard, nonetheless. Note no bunkers and the rough is medium in length. The fringe is unmaintained around this small, receptive green that runs at a medium speed.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 9

Hole 9 – Par 4 – Rating 5.60

Ironwood Links Golf Course Back Nine

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 10

Hole 10 – Par 4 – Rating 5.00

Red: 326 yds
White: 414 yds

The back nine starts on medium-size tees that are, unfortunately, not level. The rolling fairway runs downhill and is tight with medium rough. Here we see our first bunkers, with real sand, but not maintained well with weeds growing. A maintained fringe edges a green medium in size and speed with a receptive and rolling surface.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 11

Hole 11 – Par 4 – Rating 5.14

Red: 208 yds
White: 251 yds

Large and level tees give you a good look at this tight par 4. The fairway is rolling and runs downhill. The rough is medium length and there is a marshy area to avoid. Golf with no bunkers and a maintained fringe. The receptive green is medium in size and medium in speed.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 12

Hole 12 – Par 3 – Rating 4.40

Red: 89 yds

Medium size, level tee blocks begin this par 3. The hole is all carry over a marshy, weedy creek bed. The rough is medium length and there are no bunkers. Plan for an unmaintained fringe. This green needs attention. It is medium in size and speed. But it is hard, with some large dead areas needing revitalization.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 13

Hole 13 – Par 3 – Rating 5.20

Red: 112 yds
White: 146 yds

Tee off and go back across the same marshy, weedy creek bed from level, medium size tees. This par 3 has no bunkers and medium length rough. A maintained fringe skirts the medium size green. The surface is receptive, and the speed is medium.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 14

Hole 14 – Par 3 – Rating 4.00

Red: 116 yds
White: 149 yds

Large and level tees have you once again tee off back over the same marshy, weedy creek bed to an elevated green, making this par 3 play uphill. The rough is medium in length and there are bunkers, though they not maintained well and have weeds. The fringe needs maintaining here. This green is large, receptive, and rolling. It putts at a medium speed, but unfortunately, it was missing half its grass at the time of review.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 15

Hole 15 – Par 3 – Rating 5.20

Red: 132 yds
White: 159 yds

The tees here are medium in size, and unfortunately not level. This par 3 plays downhill and you need to carry the green and avoid the marsh and weeds. The rough is medium length and there are no bunkers. The maintained fringe surrounds this medium size green. The surface is receptive and rolling with it putting at a medium speed.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 16

Hole 16 – Par 4 – Rating 5.14

Red: 232 yds
White: 266 yds

Medium size, level tees start this par 4 after four straight par 3’s. The fairway is tight and rolling with medium length rough. The bunkers are real sand, just not raked, and we once again go back over the little weedy creek bed. A maintained fringe edges the green. This green is medium in both size and speed with a surface that is both receptive and rolling.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 17

Hole 17 – Par 3 – Rating 4.50

Red: 175 yds
White: 212 yds

The penultimate hole is a par 3 from level, medium size tees. The hole plays downhill with medium length rough. There are no hazards on this hole. The green is large and surrounded by a maintained fringe. The surface is tiered, receptive and rolling – and unfortunately has a lot of dead areas as well. It putts at a medium speed.

Ironwood Links Golf Course Hole 18

Hole 18 – Par 4 – Rating 5.34

Red: 274 yds
White: 312 yds

The tee blocks on the final hole are large but not level. This par 4 is extremely tight and requires precision in ball placement off the tee. The fairway is rolling, runs downhill and doglegs slightly left. The rough is medium length and you will contend again with the marshy creek bed. Note no bunkers. Plan for a maintained fringe around a small green. It is very receptive, however, and runs at a medium speed.

SUMMARY:

Ironwood Links Golf Course is a short executive style public golf course located in Aurelius Township, that is a bit of a conundrum. On the downside, the course needs much work and some tender loving care. Yet, in some ways, for an executive style 18-hole golf course, it has a charm. The front, which is along a portion of Eifert Road, is flat, and we mean flat.  It feels often like golfing on a billiard table, and it is virtually wide open. Then the back changes with a tighter feel and some open rolling terrain and the ever-present creek bed winding through the course and scenic woods. We, at Michigan Golf Matrix, believe that if the golf course could be revitalized, Ironwood Link Golf Course could be a very nice little place to play and become one of the best golf values. The course is not expensive, and they have a nice clubhouse with a larger than normal menu with good food. It is the perfect place for beginners to play (especially the front 9) and the staff are very polite and helpful. See our video of Ironwood Links Golf Course.
