Clubhouse and Amenities – Rating 8.72

The clubhouse at Hidden River Golf and Casting Club is one of the best we have seen all around. It all starts with good parking and a full-service bag drop. The food menu available and the drinks offered, from sodas and non-alcoholic beverages to a full bar, are very good. They also offer a wide and extensive collection of apparel and golf related equipment. Very good amenities and exceptional service are found throughout. The carts are quality and the cart paths for the course are top rated.

Hole 1 – Par 4 – Rating 8.00

Begin by easing yourself into your round from medium size, level sets of tees. The fairway is flat with the rough being medium length. The bunkers are real sand and maintained along with a maintained fringe. The rolling and receptive green is medium in size but putts at a fast speed.

Large, level tee boxes direct you down the flat fairway on this par 4. Rough is medium in length and the bunkers are real sand and maintained. A maintained fringe surrounds this medium size green. The surface is receptive, rolling and runs at a fast speed.

The first par 3 you encounter has large and level tees. Shoot your tee shot straight away at a green guarded by medium length rough and maintained real sand bunkers. The fringe is maintained around this medium size green that is rolling, receptive and putts at a fast speed.

Hole 4 is where things start to heat up on this course. Tee off over a wetlands area from level, medium size tees. The rolling fairway narrows into the trees and has medium length rough. The bunkers are real sand and the fringe is maintained. This particular green is large, quite receptive, and undulating. It runs at a fast speed.

Your first par 5 has medium size, level tees and a fairly flat and accessible fairway. The first cut of rough is medium length but if you go too far awry there are fairway bunkers and tall grass to contend with as well as a water hazard down the right side. Bunkers are real sand and there is a maintained fringe. The green is receptive and rolling, medium in size and fast in speed.

This par 4 starts on level, medium size tees. The fairway is most flat, and doglegs left with medium length rough. Bunkers are real sand and maintained. A maintained fringe edges the medium size green. The surface of the green is receptive, rolling and quite fast.

Many consider this hole as the signature hole at Hidden River. The tees are quite large and also level. The fairway is mostly flat and it doglegs left (more on that soon). The rough is medium in length and the bunkers are well-maintained with real sand. At the turn of the dogleg, there is a water hazard on both sides of the fairway with the green on a peninsula. This green on this long par 5 is quite large, very rolling and receptive, and putts at a fast speed. A challenge.

Level, medium size tees point you down a flatter fairway that fades slightly right and has medium length rough. The fairway also winds a bit so avoid the fairway bunkers out in the rough. The bunkers are real sand and the fringe is maintained. The green here is fast and large with an undulating and receptive surface.

The final hole on the front 9 is a challenging par 3 from large, elevated, tiered and level tees. All downhill and carry to the medium size green that is guarded by real sand bunkers and medium length rough. Club selection is vital. This green putts fast and is receptive and rolling.

Start the back 9 from medium size, level tees. The fairway is flat with medium length rough. The bunkers are real sand but there are a few pebbles in them. The fringe is maintained around this medium size green. It is receptive, rolling, and putts at a fast speed.

The first par 5 on the back nine has level and large tees. The fairway is flat and has a soft turn to the left. The rough is medium in length and there is a marshy water hazard off the tees to the right. Bunkers are real sand and maintained. The green is large with a maintained fringe. The green is receptive and rolling but did have a dead spot at the time of review-We expect that to be corrected soon. It runs at a fast speed.

This short par 4 is all about placement. The tees are level and medium in size with a rolling fairway that takes a dogleg left over a hazardous marsh/ravine. The rough is medium length and the bunkers are real sand and well-maintained. The fringe around the medium size green is maintained. The surface of this green is rolling, receptive, and putts at a fast speed.

Tee off going over a ravine from level, medium size tees to an elevated green. It is uphill all the way on this par 3. The rough is medium length and there is no bunker awaiting you. There is a maintained fringe siding this large and fast putting green. It is rolling, receptive, and sloped back to front to help balls hold the surface.

Large and level tees start this par 4. Again, placement is everything off the tee. Find the flat fairway avoiding the medium rough for your best opportunities. There is a marshy water hazard down the right side that crosses in front of the green. Bunkers are real sand but do have a few pebbles and the fringe is maintained. This fast-putting green is rolling, receptive, and large in size.

Your final par 3 is a beauty from large and level tees. Playing downhill with medium length rough and real sand bunkers. The green is large and an inviting target but lays away from you to the right. Surrounded by a maintained fringe, it putts fast with a rolling, receptive, and tiered surface.

Large and level tees start this tight par 4. Tee off over a water hazard to a fairway that is flat but runs uphill with rough to the green. Rough is medium in length and the bunkers are real sand and maintained. A maintained fringe is around this fast, medium size green. It is very receptive and rolling.

Hole 17 – Par 5 – Rating 7.34

The final par 5 on the course is quite impressive. From level, medium size, elevated tees you shoot downhill to a flat fairway with medium length rough. Real sand bunkers run along the left side and there is a water hazard right of the fairway as you near the green. The fringe is maintained. The green itself is fast, medium in size with a rolling and receptive feel.

Your final hole is a sweeping dogleg left. Tee off from level, medium size tees with a water hazard to your immediately left that should not come into play. The fairway is flat, but anything left falls off into waste area. The rough is medium length and the bunkers are real sand. The fringe is maintained around this large, fast green with a tiered surface that is rolling and receptive.

SUMMARY:

Hidden River Golf and Casting Club is one of the best courses in the upper lower peninsula and is a fair test of golf. This beautiful course is maintained very well with unique features, and the entire feel of the property is one of care and quality. The course itself is challenging with elevation changes, but fair and all aspects of the course make it enjoyable from start to finish. There are a variety of tee selections for all levels of golfers.  Mix that with a quality clubhouse and it makes Hidden River Golf and Casting Club a destination course in beautiful northern Michigan surroundings.
