Greywalls Clubhouse

Clubhouse and Amenities – Rating 7.16

The clubhouse at Greywalls at Marquette Golf Club is decent for upper Michigan. There is a bag drop and the parking is decent as well. Cart paths are above average, and the carts are top notch. The food is typical golf course fare with a limited menu and there is a full bar available. Not a lot offered for equipment other than the standard balls, gloves, etc. There is a wide range of apparel at average pricing. Amenities include a driving range and putting green. The service is very good and there are yardage books available.

On the 1st hole you start your round from level, small tees over a waste area to the first fairway. The rolling fairway runs both uphill and downhill with a dogleg right and has long rough.  There are real sand bunkers. A maintained fringe surrounds this medium size green with a rolling surface that can be hard to hold. Green putts at a fast speed.

Tee off over some deep rough from small, level tees to reach the rolling fairway than runs both uphill and downhill. There is long rough along the fairway. The bunkers are real sand and the fringe is maintained. The green is medium in size with another hard and rolling surface. The green speed is fast.

The tees are large in size and level for your first par 3. Tee off over a water hazard. The rough is long and the bunkers are real sand. The maintained fringe edges this medium size and speed green with a rolling and receptive surface.

Tee off over thick rough from small but level tees to reach this multi-faceted fairway. The fairway has flat areas but also is rolling and runs uphill from the tees, doglegging left. The rough is long and bunkers are real sand. This medium size green has a maintained fringe and a rolling, hard to hold surface. It putts at a medium speed.

This par 3 is all carry as you tee off from level, medium size tees. Uphill over rack faces to a green surrounded by long rough, and a maintained fringe. Thankfully this green is large. Unfortunately, it is also hard, rolling and running at a medium speed. A challenge.

Tee off small, level tees uphill to the fairway. The fairway is rolling with long rough and runs back downhill. There are no hazards on this hole. The fringe is maintained around this medium size green. The green surface is hard, rolling and medium in speed.

The 13th hole is the first par 5 on the back 9 has small and level tee blocks. The fairway is rolling and runs downhill with long rough siding it. There are real sand bunkers and a maintained fringe. The green is medium in size and speed. It is also hard and undulating.

Small but level tees head you down this par 4. The fairway is rolling and runs downhill once again with long rough. The bunkers are real sand. The fringe is maintained. Shoot to the medium size green that can be hard to hold. The speed is medium and the surface quite rolling.

You run into the first back 9 par 3 at hole 15 with level and small tees. This is an all-carry par 3 that has long rough and no hazards unless you count anything not on the green hazardous so aim that tee shot correctly. The fringe is maintained around this hard and rolling green that is medium in both size and speed.

Play strategically from small, level tees to a fairway that demands precision in placement. The rough is long and the bunkers are real sand. There is a maintained fringe surrounding this hard, rolling green with a medium speed and also medium in size.

The final par 3 has level and small tees. There is some room for error on this hole but stay out of the long rough and the real sand bunkers if possible. The green is medium in size and in speed. The surface is hard and rolling. Note a few too many ball marks that didn’t get repaired properly.

The final hole is a par 5 from level, medium size tees. The fairway is rolling and drops off downhill with long rough. The bunkers are real sand and the fringe is maintained. Finish out on a green of medium size and speed with a hard and rolling surface.

SUMMARY:

Greywalls Course at Marquette Golf Club is one of the best courses Michigan’s upper peninsula has to offer. A golf enthusiast will love the wild ride of many dramatic elevation changes, and consistently rolling fairways over the entire course. Much about the course has a challenging but consistent feel with the greens, sand and rough having much consistency. It has many sets of tee boxes and challenges with tough approach shots. The course layout has a real “up north” feel with rock outcroppings and a variety of terrain that is well maintained throughout and provides a truly unique golf experience. There are breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Superior and it highlights the rugged beauty of the Marquette area. The best way to describe it for public courses is “must play” to experience this spectacular golf course. One piece of advice: Hit it straight at Greywalls.
