The small Clubhouse for the Bootlegger Course at Forest Dunes Golf Club has a lot to offer.  We found it chock-full of Bootlegger themed apparel and paraphernalia. And it’s right near the first tee. Attended by friendly staff, we received a welcoming handshake that blends luxury with small town hospitality. Nearby is the Bootlegger bar, an energetic hot spot to grab a quick drink or bite to eat before getting back to golf. Even the bathrooms accessible from the patio are on par with luxury resorts. 

The main spacious Clubhouse at the Forest Dunes Course melds modern luxury with rustic charm at this golf resort. Soaring timber beams and expansive windows offer sweeping views of the lush fairways and towering pines. The Clubhouse provides a welcoming sanctuary for golf enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. From its meticulously manicured grounds to its inviting interiors, every detail exudes a sense of warmth and sophistication, inviting guests to unwind. Allow some extra time to enjoy a gourmet meal at the acclaimed restaurant, share tales over drinks at the cozy bar, or simply bask in the serene ambiance of the outdoor terrace.  The Clubhouse at Forest Dunes promises an unforgettable experience. The amenities are quite good and include a driving range and massive hilltop putting course.

Hole 1 – Par 3 – Rating 9.20

The rolling fairway runs uphill. There is no rough aside from fescue far right. Bunkers have real sand but also had a few small stones in them. This green is medium size and the smallest on the Bootlegger. It has a maintained fringe, is elevated, rolling, receptive, sloped back to front and putts at a fast pace.

Hole 2 – Par 3 – Rating 10.00

The fairway has a slight dogleg left around a fairway bunker that, hopefully, does not come into play. Playing slightly downhill as well, there is no rough save for some fescue right and long. There are real sand bunkers and a maintained fringe. The large green is receptive, rolling and fast in speed.

Hole 3 – Par 3 – Rating 9.50

Hole 3 plays downhill on the rolling fairway. You’ll have no real rough but expect real sand bunkers, including one hidden behind the green. Fringe is maintained around this large, tiered green.  Its fast-paced surface is rolling and receptive.

Hole 4 – Par 3 – Rating 9.00

Hole 4 has a rolling fairway that goes uphill all the way.  Only real sand bunkers to avoid, you’ll have no rough or water hazards here. A well-maintained fringe edges this large, fast-putting green.  It has a receptive and rolling surface.

Hole 5 – Par 3 – Rating 9.5

The hole slopes uphill on the rolling fairway with no rough save for fescue far right and left. There is also a tree line far right. Bunkers contain real sand but they also have some small pebbles. The large green has a maintained fringe. Its receptive surface is tiered, rolling, and quite fast.

Hole 6 – Par 3 – Rating 10.00

Here we have a rolling fairway that runs downhill. There are no hazards at all to worry about. However, the large, rolling, receptive green can be a worry. A maintained fringe surrounds this green.

Hole 7 – Par 3 – Rating 9.5

Hole 7 has a rolling fairway and runs uphill, all the way. The rough is long fescue and there are no bunkers or water. This large green can be a challenge. Surrounded by maintained fringe, the green is fast-putting, receptive, rolling, tiered and sloped back to front. It can be a lot to diagnose.

Hole 8 – Par 3 – Rating 9.5

Take this rolling fairway all downhill to the green. Avoid the real sand bunkers. This large green is skirted with a maintained fringe. Another receptive and tiered green, the surface slopes back to front with a rolling feel. It putts at a fast speed, especially downhill.

Hole 9 – Par 3 – Rating 9.00

Hole 9 runs downhill with a rolling fairway. Rough includes some fescue and look for real sand bunkers to avoid. There is a well-maintained fringe around this large, fast rolling green. It has a surface sloped back to front with a receptive and rolling feel.

End on the10th hole as your final hole.  This runs downhill then back uphill to a slightly elevated green. There is some fescue, but your shot would need to be way off to find that. Here, the real sand bunkers are a bigger worry. The large, rolling green, with its maintained fringe, is receptive, sloping back to front. As with all the greens on this course, it putts at a fast pace.

SUMMARY

The 10-hole Bootlegger course at Forest Dunes Golf Club in Roscommon, Michigan, is a new par-3 course.  Golfers play, walking only, with no electric carts on this course. It has a renaissance golf design, meandering through the undulating terrain of northern Michigan.  Built on a great canvas of landscape, the Bootlegger course features wide fairways bordered by towering pines and strategically placed bunkers.  This demands strategic precision from players of all skill levels on all ten of the short par 3’s.  Regardless of the likelihood of ever-elusive holes-in-one, expect a fun round. Music plays throughout the course from carefully placed speakers that blend seamlessly into the pristine setting.  

Hone your short game.

Scorecards for the Bootlegger do not include yardage because tees vary based on the day.  For the day’s yardage, look to the chalkboard on the clubhouse wall. Like magical staircases, the Bootlegger Course changes slightly each day. You can hone your short game, work on approach shots, flop shots and attempt to master the large, fast greens showcase.   Tee off from mats that maybe moved up or back to create holes of different length. With large creatively designed greens in a variety of subtle shapes, expect some unique pin locations and immaculate conditioning. There are no water features on the Bootlegger, but with the use of strategic slopes, it doesn’t need water. 

As a new short course, it is great for entry-level players and golfers of all ages.  Greens fees for the Bootlegger are not just for a round, but a daily rate, providing a great deal in golf packages. You can hone your short game, work on approach shots, flop shots and attempt to master the large, fast greens showcase.  The Bootlegger course at Forest Dunes promises a golfing experience unlike any other.  Every swing can bring an unintimidating sense of fun.
